*The Hellfire Club is comprised of ultra-rich and powerful individuals whose ruling Inner Circle is engaged in a conspiracy to control the world through an interlocking combination of economic power and ruthless political domination. The Inner Circle was led by Sebastian Shaw, but Magneto, the mutant master of magnetism, deposed him and now directs the club's activities. Longtime foes of the X-Men, the Hellfire Club came close to destroying the mutant super hero team by turning the X-Man Phoenix into their pawn. This attempt, though, backfired disastrously. Yet this setback has not stopped the Hellfire Club from pursuing its plans to eliminate the X-Men.
