*The rank insignia, or rank "pips" as they are called by the crew, give a visual indication of a crew member's Starfleet rank status at any given time. The ranking is as follows:
No Pip - Midshipman
Gold Pip - Ensign
1 Black, 1 Gold - Lieutenant Junior Grade
2 Gold - Lieutenant
1 Black, 2 Gold - Lieutenant Commander
3 Gold - Commander
4 Gold - Captain
