*The War of the Worlds (The Mercury Theatre)
The Red planet invades it's blue neighbor, leaving only death and destruction in it's wake!
Opening: "The Columbia Broadcasting System and it's affiliated stations present Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre on the Air in The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells!" (theme: Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto #1)
The Mercury Theatre presented The War of the Worlds on Sunday evening, October 30, 1938 as a Halloween stunt. What followed made radio history. The dramatizationseemed so real it convinced millions of listeners that the Earth was being invaded by Mars. Phone circuits were swamped with calls to the police, CBS, and anyone else that would listen. Orsen Wells, a talented but little known actor/director still in his twenties, instantly became an overnight sensation.
