About Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos

Although the cover title read Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos, the title's original indicia read simply Sgt. Fury.

The title, commencing in December 1963, focused on the exploits of Nicholas 'Nick' Fury, and his company of men, the Howlers, during World War II. The title produced original content, featuring first the art of Jack Kirby, then Dick Ayers; John Severin later provided inks over Dick Ayers pencils but indelibly branded the art his own.

By August of 1965, Marvel had re-imagined the modern day version of Nick Fury as a spy master and leading the agency S.H.I.E.L.D., launching in Strange Tales (1951) #135 and sharing the book with Dr. Strange. The new Nick Fury would earn his own title in June 1968, Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., which would run concurrently with the Sgt. Fury title, telling tales of the same lead character in differing time periods. As of July 1974, issue #120 would be the last of the new content for the WWII Fury. With issue #121 (Sept 1974), the indicia would change to Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos, and commence to publish reprints of the original series.
