"...A HERO TO SOME, A VILLAIN TO OTHERS..."

Those immortal words opened a world of comics that I never new existed until the fateful day Safeway stoped carrying comics and I found a new source.

The creaking old spinner rack at Soupy's grocery introduced me to some of my favorite comics of all time. Sgt Rock, Weird War Tales and Jonah Hex.

This issue is all that is great about Mr. Hex. While some may be put off by the way his language was presented, I thought it was perfect and fit the mood of the series.

In this issue we find Jonah confronting his distraught wife Mei Ling and the U.S. Marshall J.D. Lang.

As Hex wrestles with the words his father told him "Wimmen is no durned good!" he is also being tracked at the beheast of the Warnke brothers.

After he learns another of his female companions has left town, he attempts to drown his problem at the local saloon.

We are treated to a "Drunken Monkey" style western shootout as the intoxicated Hex dispatches 2 of his pursuers and lingers as he looks down over the bodies.

As seemingly the entire town is conspiring against him, Jonah flees and has a period of introspection as he realizes that at almost 40 years old, he has nothing to show for his gunfighting ways.

His tosses his six shooters in dispair and again seeks the confort of the bottle.

He is awoken by a caring Christian woman who offers him kindness and he moves into the Christian Temperance Farms.

The culmination of his stay leads him a fight with the rest of the gang that was tracking him.

As he kills the last, he realizes that while he may not have anything tangible to show for his life, he is not beyond saving and his life has not been as meaningless as he thought.

This issue is a great primer for those who want to see what makes the great gunfighter tick.
