There's a lot of great stuff out there so which comic book movie are you most anticipating?

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
First Appearance of Kang in the Big Screen MCU! This looks phenomenal. Will set the stage for Marvel's next Phase.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods
Hoping that this isn't a let down after the excellent first movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3
Drax is gone for sure. How many other Guardians will fall? Looks like a more somber tone than the first two installments.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Into the Spider-Verse was, shall we say - Amazing? Can this one be just as Spectacular?

The Flash
Considering DC's recent track record I'm not even sure this will be released or if it will join Batgirl, Wonder Woman 3, Black Adam 2, etc. in the dustbin.

The Marvels
This looks interesting. I'm hoping to see the triumphant return of Goose, the Flerkin Cat.

Blue Beetle
To be honest, I had no idea this was coming out until I googled comic book movies of 2023. Crossing my fingers that this will be alright. Um, Carapax, the Indestructible Man? Awesome pull!

Kraven the Hunter
Introducing yet another future member of the Sinister Six? I'm guessing they might come into contact with Spider-Man at some point, right?

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
Eh, the first one wasn't too bad. Maybe we'll get more of Black Manta this time?

Outside of Marvel or DC I know of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie but can't really find any others. You guys got any?

So what are you looking forward the most to and which ones will you be seeing overall? Call Me

Expecting disappointment as the superhero movie/tv bubble bursts, starts to come back to reality.

I have the most hope for Antman.

DC seems to be flushing everything so none of it seems to really matter. Aquaman was the last movie I paid to see at a theater but with it already cancelled in the future and Jason getting talked up as switching to Lobo I'm not sure there's even a point to watching AQ2. Flash has too much offscreen nonsense tied to it now that they didn't recast. Even Black Adam is using advertisements talking up the DCU getting bigger and bigger while all the news is how everyone's fired and/or cancelled like Black Adam 2.

Kraven is Sony I assume which seems to disappoint continually. At their current pace, before they get enough solo movies out the gate they'll have to recast Spider-man again to avoid the Social Security income conflicts.

Marvels may be the sleeper sneaking Silver Surfer or Galactus into play or setting the stage but the tv series for MM isn't bringing much love or commentary to the counter.

Guardians I expect disappointment. It's Marvel but like the Thor movie they're moving away from fan positive choices chasing $$ and tie in stuff to other movies it seems more than delivering great stand alone movies. I'm sick of Batista in general at this point since he can't keep his mouth shut outside of work. When you spew hate all the time I can't relax, forget about life for a couple hours when your face is now tied to political nonsense. I had a lot of customers refuse to see Captain Marvel for similar reasons. Entertain then stay out of the politics and limelight until your next entertainment gig. Wall

It feels like it's taken so long to get from Shazam to Shazam 2 I expect all the kids are too old for the roles now. If you're using children you need to rapid fire your productions before they outgrow the roles. Shazam 2 may have that same feeling of that 70's show season 8 or Stargirl season 3 on the lighter side.

I think this streaming stuff is taking a little of the edge off as well. Take Black Panther 2. It hits Disney+ Feb 1st. I save $20 not paying to see it in a theater. I can save $25 not buying the Blue-ray. I can add Disney+ onto my Hulu for a week or so if I time it right for a buck or so. If I get to the point I just have to see it again before football season next year, just add Disney+ back for a week and that's assuming it isn't offered up on regular Hulu by then. I'm not seeing a lot of point in continuing to purchase movies I expect to be parked on streaming services for years to come. At most give it a couple Black Fridays and grab a $5 copy then but even ones I already own, its just easier to click and stream than get up, dig for it, load it in the blue ray and push all those buttons.

I don't really understand this mentality that the rest of the DC movies coming out don't matter and aren't worth watching because the current universe is about to be flushed. Was Joker a terrible movie because it wasn't tied to the larger universe? Did people refuse to see Dark Knight because they knew Joker couldn't be back for the next one, so therefore that movie was "irrelevant"? Do we have to get Michael Keaton in more DC movies to make Flash worth seeing? It's nonsense. A good movie stands on it's own. Tying into a sequel is a bonus, not a necessity.

Yes, Joker was so bad I watched it once and gave the Blue Ray away for free. The Joker movie everyone wanted was a close to immediate follow up to the Joker and Harley in Suicide Squad but they piddled around and never got there. DC is a train wreck.

I just watched Black Adam last night and even though it was tanked by the critics, I liked parts of it although it came across as chopy at best and completely disappointing long term knowing that there will be nothing coming from it since they've already announced it and fired Superman that showed up in the end scene. The movie overall just last weekend had two customers in saying they hated it and asking me to explain the origin of Black Adam which it turns out was chopped up and confusingly inserted into the movie so apparently two grown men that paid to see it couldn't figure it out. Simply put, Black Adam, is the FATHER of the 1st Shazam in the movie but they apparently didn't make it that obvious to people they turned off/tuned out before the end. I wasn't happy with the changes to Hawkman either. They boosted him to Shazam level power where he's just a guy with wings and a mace. Instead of taking the obvious path of making Hawkman the ancient Egyptian version and tying into the history of Black Adam, they went for an alien version implying he was with the JSA in the 40's with Doctor Fate. I did like seeing Atom Smasher but once again he's tied to a history that doesn't exist yet. The same with Cyclone. Potential I would have enjoyed more if I thought it was going somewhere other than a one and done.

Marvels set the bar with layers of movies and TV shows all tying together in a convoluted but singular universe. DC's all over the place with different portrayals of Hawkman for example ranging from Smallville with the ancient Egyptian reincarnated version, to the CW versions from space to now have this one thrown out. The result is people who aren't comic book folk coming in the door either completely confused or just not interested. I've also got hundreds of dollars in merchandise tied to the movies NOT selling for the most part since they aren't creating fans that care like lets say Stranger Things for example where rarely a week goes by without something Stranger Things related selling.

DC simply should have tied the CW shows directly to the movies, cast the CW stars in the movie roles and tied everything together. A few nice comic series directly related would have been nice as well. All 3 branches of DC working in cohesion instead of all 3 doing their own thing leaving people irritated or just not caring anymore. Stargirl's another example. 3 years building a Justice Society based storyline just to cancel it and start doing something completely different with Black Adam's Justice Society which is now done meaning we have to wait around for a 5th attempt and recast/rewrite if we toss in the Smallville and Legends with the other Stargirl portrayals.

DC has a history of even if we like something they leave us hanging and never getting more. Take the Superman Returns, they cancelled the sequel and left us hanging. No Superboy even though we got to see him throw a piano. Instead they eventually turn him into Atom on CW? You force a replacement and rehash on us with Man of Steel and that stupid set of fights with the Kryptonians and followed up again with stupid fights with Batman (Lets stop fighting now since we have mommies with the same name!!) Now that we've settled in too this version being the reality, he's been yanked again. There's a Shazam2 movie coming but now we're left hanging with no plans to tie in Black Adam?

Marvels not exempt either. If they finally get FF out the door, the last thing many of us want is another origin movie. Sitting thru two already and now 3 with Spider-man is enough!!!! Hopefully they at least put pants on The Thing this time.

Ant-Man and the Wasp for sure for me. Especially after seeing the new trailer: Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania | New Trailer Possible Spoilers!

Super, super stoked for it, will probably be seeing it opening weekend. Daydreaming

Loved the first 2 GotG films and I don't think this will be any different. Does look like it could be a little more somber in tone than the first two. I wouldn't be surprised to see a character or 2 not making it. Sad

Those are the ones I will probably be seeing in the theater and the rest I'll wait for them to come to one of the streaming places that I subscribe to.

Not looking good for the Ants.
Quote:
"Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" already has a 54% rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes.
This is the lowest score for an MCU movie since "Eternals" arrived in November 2021.
Insider's review called the sequel fun, but flawed.

Here's hoping the movie finds at least a few fans. About 30 Pops and some key chains already here waiting for fans to want them. I guessed right and didn't order the Eternals stuff but I had hope for this moving inspiring a few new faces. Pray

I love how people trash a movie before it even comes out. Shame on You

From my perspective, having only seen the trailers, it looks freaking awesome. I will be seeing it Saturday morning to confirm. Daydreaming

My head hurts thinking that I live in a world where Thor 4 gets better reviews than Quantumania.

On the bright side, I've noticed a lot of the critics are complaining that this installment doesn't have the fun atmosphere of the first two, and the serious tone in the new one isn't to their liking. If that's the case, then I'm all for it. For the record, I really liked the first Ant-Man movie, and the second one is my least favorite Marvel movie (Thor: Love and Thunder doesn't get the crown only because it's the only Marvel movie I refuse to ever see). I won't mind if Quantumania is missing all the trademark MCU jokesy-wokesies.

I believe those negative reviews at Bleeding cool are from early showings the reviewers get in to see. The news out of China a few weeks ago where it was released early at wasn't great either. It's probably the only movie this year I would have considered buying but now it sounds like waiting for Disney+ free per view during the Redskins or Redwolves preseason in the fall. Still checking every few hours for new owner/new coach/ new name news.

It also sounds like we're about to get a large amount of extreme films with the Winnie the Pooh slasher film cranking out big profits and a ton of everything hitting public domain over the next few years from Bambi and Mickey to Superman and Batman.
Quote:
In the next 10 years, some of the most iconic characters in pop culture — including Bugs Bunny, Batman and Superman — will pass into public domain, or at least their most early incarnations. Some elements of Pooh are still off-limits, like his red shirt, since they apply to later interpretations. Tigger, who debuted in 1928’s “The House at Pooh Corner,” isn’t public until 2024.

Many have next Jan. 1 circled. That’s when the original version of Mickey Mouse, from “Steamboat Willie,” becomes public domain. It will be open on season on the face of the Walt Disney Co. — or at least that early whistling variety of Mickey.

Pop culture, as a concept, was born in the 1920s, meaning many of the most indelible — and still very culturally present — works will fall into public domain in the coming years. There will be all kinds of new and unlikely contexts for some of these characters. Some could be wonderful, some schlocky. But “Winnie Pooh: Blood and Honey” may just be a taste of what's in store.

“When Superman and Batman fall into the public domain, there’s going to be some wild films, I’m sure of it,” says “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” writer, director and co-producer Rhys Waterfield. “There’s going to be so many different and cool unique iterations coming off that. I might do one.”

Though made for less than $100,000, “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” will open Friday on some 1,500 screens in North America, an unusually wide release for such a little-funded movie. It’s already made $1 million in Mexico and has many more international territories booked. For Waterfield, a British film producer of direct-to-DVD titles (credits include “Dinosaur Hotel” and “Easter Killing”), it’s already a hit way beyond expectation.

“I kind of thought this could do a small theatrical run in some places and do quite well commercially," says Waterfield. "But it's blown up way beyond that to a scale that's absolutely insane.”

In a 2021 tally of media franchises by Statista, Winnie the Pooh, with $80.3 billion in worldwide revenue, tied Mickey Mouse for No. 3, trailing only Pokémon and Hello Kitty. But unlike them, Pooh accounts for a veritable religion for his kind-hearted witticisms and contented spiritual outlook. Pooh is as much a gentle sage as he is a round-tummied toon. When Waterfield realized Pooh was entering public domain, “I had a spark in my eye,” he says.

Here was much-coveted intellectual property that could sell just about any film. “I’ve never met anyone that doesn’t know who Winnie the Pooh is,” Waterfield said in a recent phone interview speaking from Amsterdam.

But certainly, not everyone has been so happy about the idea of one of the most benevolent bears turning feral monster. Waterfield says he receives daily messages telling him he's evil, and even some death threats. One person said they were calling the police.

“You've got to be pretty thick-skinned to do a movie like this,” Waterfield says. “It baffles me. People think making an alternative version of him is somehow infiltrating their mind and destroying their memories. When I get claims that I ruined people’s childhoods, I’m genuinely confused. I just kind of brush it off and carry on making more of them."

Waterfield is already planning sequels with Peter Pan, Bambi and many more. (The Felix Salten book “Bambi, A Life in the Woods” also became public domain last year.)

To be completely honest, and not trying to hurt any feelings, but I couldn't give a flying rat's patootie what the Chinese think about Ant-Man and the Wasp. Now, if they want to explain giant spy balloons then I might be interested.

Apparently there's a Kang variant in one of the end credits that made all the copies of Avengers annual #21 sell. I can't picture any reason to have belief that it'll turn into a long term spike in price but I'm sure someone's going to try.

Saw Ant-Man 3 (& the Wasp: Quantumania) last weekend and totally loved it!

Complete Science Fiction from beginning to end. The Quantumverse was insane, the character played by Bill Murray (Krylar) lived up to his comic book counterpart, * Cassie gets her suit, super-intelligent ants, freaking M.O.D.O.K. !

I heard initial reactions to MODOK were along the lines of, "That's ridiculous" or "How silly", etc. My answer was, "Have you seen the comics?" Of course he is ridiculous and silly, he's a giant head floating around in a high tech wheel less wheelchair and has tiny little arms and legs. How can this not be absurd. But, they did a great job of it and even though his "traditional" origin was changed it actually made sense story-wise.

It was a two hour movie but seemed much shorter to me. There was a good mix of action, the usual dose of MCU comedy and Kang the Conqueror was sufficiently menacing.

* Cassie got a suit, both shrank and enlarged, but never announced her new Superhero name whether it be Stature, Stinger, Ant-Girl, Giant-Girl, Bigger/Smaller Girl???

NOT SO SPOILER ALERT!!!!

One of the end credits scenes showed Rama-Tut, Immortus and (I think) Scarlet Centurion. Oh, and the Council of Kangs. This shouldn't come as a surprise to any nerd that knows the source material. Nerd

Also a very deep pull in the other end credit scene with Victor Timely, setting up Loki Season 2.

I'm hoping to enjoy it when it hits Disney+ next football season. The news reports aren't good for the film though. It seems to have had huge drops the second week out. I'm also not hearing any buzz in store. Merchandise not moving, etc.. I'm getting the feeling a lot of people are like me now and just not interested in it enough to pay to see it at theater prices and may not jump on the Blue-Ray band wagon anymore since it's destined to be a permanent parked fixture at Disney+ starting later this year.

If I time it just right I can probably watch it for less than 50 cent by waiting until the end of my reoccurring Hulu Basic, adding Disney+ for a prorated charge, watch it, then immediately turn the subscription back off again!! Don't Tell Anyone

and proud of it!!!

I used to think it was important to own every superhero movie that came out I liked. Now I've found even though I'm sitting next to a book case with thousands of dollars of movies and tv series, the majority I've lost any interest in seeing again anytime soon and the rare time I do want to see one, if it's football season, it's easier to just flip over and stream it.

This isn't even the first time I've been thru this. We had to have everything on VHS. Then along comes DVD so the important ones get repurchased and the rest end up in yards sales for like 50 cent return on the investment. Just as we get going good on the DVD's here comes Blue Ray, HD TV's wide screens, etc... so there we go converting again and even trying to hook an old vcr to an HD1080P set, the visuals were horrible!!!! Then we get a good collection of Blue Rays going and now it seems like we're being forced to have streaming options so what's the point in continuing to piss away hard earned money on items that historically have been replaced with something newer and better every 10 years or so??

I used to look at my step fathers collection of reel to reel music stuff and think it was a big pile of junk compared to my cassette tapes which were so much cooler than my dads 8-tracks or moms records. All the transitions since then I've given up on music entirely. I remember this alcoholic I was living with I splurged and got her son an MP3 thing for his birthday. Less than 6 hours before he slung it into the lake by accident he said. "throwing rocks with it hooked to his sleeve"

It appears we're on the way to being able to watch anything for free. In the last two weeks I finally saw the two Smurf movies and really enjoyed them even with Dougie Howser in a leading role. They're on the firestick thing from Amazon under the Freeview movie stuff. I also realized something important. Occasionally woman pick the good guy over the bad guy. It turns out Phoebe turned down Gargamels proposal to marry Ant-man on Friends. I would have never known that if I hadn't watched. SPOILER--I also learned there's a second female Smurf now!!

No one was ever forced to convert their VHS collection to DVD, then Blu-Ray. That's a choice. However, the advent of clearer pictures as well as all the extras made it worth it to most people to make the switch. I still have many movies on VHS I've never upgraded, because they are fine just the way they are.

Not sure what you mean by dumping VHS tapes and getting only fifty cents as a return on their investment. Did anyone buy VHS tapes back then hoping to make a return on their investment? No, they just bought it because they wanted to watch a movie. THAT was the return on their investment.

My comment about being cheap was more related to watching newer stuff on streaming. Personally, I wouldn't be proud that I go out of my way to watch things for free that involve thousands of people to produce and who need to get paid for their work in order to survive. Imagine if everyone operated that way. It'd be like if all your customers told you they were never going to buy comics from your store again, yet demanded you allowed them to hangout and read comics in your store all day long.

My comment about being cheap was more related to watching newer stuff on streaming. Personally, I wouldn't be proud that I go out of my way to watch things for free that involve thousands of people to produce and who need to get paid for their work in order to survive.

I suspect the vast majority of those people were paid weekly or monthly as they made the content or they wouldn't have showed up for work. It's usually only a few of the big names with residual contracts getting more afterwards. The movies are typically showing huge profits long before getting into streaming. Wasting money to needlessly pump even more cash in thru Blue Ray's or whatever else is going to get offered is pointless and wasteful. I expect to see buying movies in physical form to gradually go away entirely with things trending toward going to codes and such now. Even RedBox doesn't force you to come to the Redbox anymore with downloadable rentals and purchases. I don't even remember the last time I got a hard disc included with a new computer. Everything downloads it seems.

No one was ever forced to convert their VHS collection to DVD, then Blu-Ray. That's a choice.
Of course it's a choice and one many of us made because each new hot thing was supposed to be better than the old way.

Not sure what you mean by dumping VHS tapes and getting only fifty cents as a return on their investment.

When you feel you have to buy the same movie 2 or 3 different times and the older style is only selling for maybe 50 cent which is what I saw VHS tapes selling for at yard sales and flea markets in this area about 10 years ago it's taking a loss or getting no real return on your investment. It's not just switching types either. New movie comes out, $24.99 everywhere. Wait six months or so and the next black Friday it's $10. Save $15 by just waiting a little.
