Item Biography

"Face-to-Face with...the Lizard!" (X-440).

Reported sightings of a man-sized talking lizard terrorizing the Florida Everglades have been filling the news, and J. Jonah Jameson doesn't miss the opportunity for headlines by publicly challenging Spider-Man to tackle the "Lizard". Peter Parker sees the chance for some income and pushes Jameson to send him down to shoot the fight. Unfortunately for Pete, Jameson decides to accompany him. Spider-Man confronts the Lizard and finds out the dangerous reality behind the news stories. Peter has done his research, though, and pays a visit to Doctor Curtis Connors, a local expert in reptiles. What he finds there is Connor's crying wife who explains that her husband IS the Lizard. Dr. Connor's experiments in reptilian regrowth were meant to find him a way to replace his lost arm, but instead turned him into a monster. For the sake of Conner's wife and child, Spider-Man brings his science expertise to bear and concocts a remedy that he must force-feed to the Lizard to bring the Doctor back to humanity. Spider-Man agrees to keep the Doc's secret, earning him a friend for life. 21 pages.

First appearance of the Lizard (Curt Connors), Martha Connors and Billy Connors.

Reprinted in Marvel Tales #3, Marvel Tales #143, and Spider-Man Classics #7.
