It's The Secret Wars Tale You Weren't Meant To Read (But You Have Must!)

2 years ago, if you would have asked me what I thought about DEADPOOL, I would have used words like: "overkill", "parody", and "overused". But it seems like the more I see that goofy Merc' With A Mouth appear, the more I can't get enough of him. And in true DEADPOOL fashion, we get a throwback tale of DEADPOOL appearing in the popular SECRET WARS mini-series of the 1980's.

Anyone who remembers the original Secret Wars can remember the juxt of the story: a number of Marvel super-heroes from Earth are brought to a plantet created by a godlike being called "THE BEYONDER" to battle a number of Marvel super-villains. In the series, the heroes make uneasy alliances, make friends of enemies and lovers out of some.

Now imagine that opening scene when the heroes appear in their arena for the first time and that loudmouth DEADPOOL is among them. And yep, that's pretty much the story. Deadpool spends much of his time interfering and playing a part in conversation between the heroes that we know happened in the original SECRET WARS books. It's an extremely predictable premise, but a totally believable one, since THE BEYONDER is virtually all-powerful and can adjust time, space and reality with a single thought. So, yeah, it's very possible DEADPOOL was there with everyone. And because I bought the original SECRET WARS when I was a kid, I totally bought into this scenario.

I won't say this is the best writing Cullen Bunn has ever done, but he totally understands and pays homage to the events of the original series without losing any of its' charm while Deadpool bumbles his way through the issue. I'm totally loving this book, and I'm SO disappointed that this wasn't given a 12-issue treatment to cover every single event and issue in SECRET WARS. If they can add an extra issue onto the current SECRET WARS mini-series, they could add 8 more to this one! If you enjoyed the original SECRET WARS, you'll love this series. It will bring back memories of WASP's weird Battleworld relationship with Magneto, the healer Zsaji, and with much more "'POOL'".
