I won* 7 boxes of cards from a seller on eBay recently. With shipping, they each averaged out to $15, so regardless of what I pulled, I'm calling it a win. I started breaking into them and figured they were fun 90s nostalgia so why not do a breakdown.
*okay, fine, I was the only bid on any of them
1995 Topps Finest Image Universe Founders Series - 24 cards per Box, 6 cards per Pack, 144 cards total
On the plus side, I remember how completely awesome the idea of Topps Finest cards were in the mid-90s. On the negative side, there was a lot of the art here is generic poses of filler characters.
90 card Base Set (138 pulled vs odds saying 138.4 in a box)
I was able to pull a complete set, but there were a lot of triples and singles, which is always a downer. Topps does a quality job on the chromium coating. But, as I said above, giving each of the 6 founders an equal number of cards led to a LOT of nonsense.
6 card "Clearzone" 1:11 pack Subset (3 pulled vs odds saying 2.2)
More clear cards! This time with hofoil effect! So 90s!
6 card "Debut Covers" 1:14** pack Subset (1 pulled vs odds saying 1.7)
A light holofoil effect on the covers. I'm always disappointed with cover images as cards. Even moreso these mass produced #1s as an insert set.
6 card "Interview" 1:14** pack Subset (2 pulled vs odds saying 1.7)
These are a fun idea. Inserting pictures of creators with their characters. Some look absurd, all look so 90s. I'm not sure if it was just time or the way they were from the start, but the photo images have discolored under the card covering, which is a bummer. Or makes Erik Larsen look like a skinny, balding Hulk. Whichever.
Interesting that the base set and all the inserts stayed in alphabetically listing of the creator. So, all of Larsen's came first in the base set, then Savage Dragon was #1 of each of the three insert sets.
**Stated odds were just 1:7 for inserts (other than Clearzone), so it's assumed the two sets were evenly distributed for the 1:14 ratio.
