Can be any current members, former members, de-powered, deceased, whatever.
You can put them in any order that you like.
in descending order (mine just happen to have 5 men and 5 women)
10. Husk. She's new-ish, but fun. Had to include a newbie amidst all of my 'oldskool' X-men...
09. Beast. Lotta Beast haters out there, i'm not one of them. He's about to become a major player.
08. White Queen. Emma would be higher but she's relatively new to the 'good' side.
07. Cyclops. There's alot to not like about Scott, but he's just so vital to X-men history. had to be here.
06. Rogue. Feel she's a bit over-used right now, but its only because she is incredibly complex and for the most part, likeable.
05. Nightcrawler. Truly unique among his peers.
04. Iceman. Bobby Drake, when will you fulfill your omega mutant potential?
03. Jean Grey. How we miss you, Marvel Girl.
02. Wolverine.
01. Shadowcat. Kitty is hands down my favorite X-man, one of my favorite comic creations of all time.
near misses: Colossus, Cable, and Multiple Man (though he's technically never accepted an offer to be an official X-man)

Countdown #31 when Jimmy Olsen was being analyzed by Cadmus:
Dr. Sterling Roquette:
Just kick back and, as Mr. Cannon here so eloquently put it, relax. Let the
AMBIENT NUCLEAR ULTRA-SPECTROGRAPH
do its thing.
Jimmy Olsen:
Why don't you guys just use an acronym?
Dr. Sterling Roquette:
You think about that.

Gonna show my age here...
10. Kitty Pryde: When she was first introduced, she added a bit of that "old X-men" flavor.
9. Beast/Hank McCoy: The wittiest of the bunch. With or without fur.
8. Iceman/Bobby Drake: An original, who was the "wild one" of the bunch. I liked how he grew up over the years.
7. Mimic: Yes he counts, as he impersonated Professor X for a while back in the day.
6. Storm/Orroro Munroe: Her original back story was cool. Took me years to get the whole personality change (the mohawk years).
5. Banshee/Sean Cassidy: Gotta have Irish in here. Not all that in the power department, but his character provides some good stories.
4. Nightcrawler/Kurt Wagner: He made a great counter-point to Wolverine in Claremont's first run, and had that swashbuckling thing down pat.
3. Cyclops/Scott Summers: Perhaps the second most abused character in the Marvel U. It's a wonder he's still sane after that's happened to him.
2. Professor X/Charles Xavier: With out him, there is no X-Men, plus he has some interesting back story elements.
And now, with little to no surprise, #1..
Wolverine. When he got added to the team, he added a bit of the "practical" to the X-Men. The old soldier mentality, and an aggressiveness that wasn't present before. Even though they keep retconning his background, he still has the most interesting backstory.

I've missed the last 10 years of X-Men so there are probably some problems with this list but...in particular order of preference:
1. Wolverine - He just rules on so many levels.
2. Professor X - Without him there would be no X-Men
3. Cyclops - Original Team Member
4. Jean Grey - Original Team Member
5. Iceman -
6. Beast -
7. Angel - I actually liked his Archangel character but the normal one is good too.
8. Havok - The brotherly dynamic and power of the Summers Brothers is worth while in my mind.
9. Colossus - I always thought his character was cool. Short of having Wolverines powers, I'd like his.
10. Rogue - I've heard she's changed a bit since the early 90s but I always liked her powers and dynamic within the team.
In writing this I noticed there are very few women in my list. Storm, Psylocke and Shadowcat are decent but not in my top 10. There have been a few less powerful team members too, like Dazzler and Jubilee. Who am I missing out on since I've been out of things?
To the ones who want me on my knees. You cannot control my destiny.
There is light that flows within my veins. There is darkness for those who bring me pain.

10. Beast- Beast, at least the way he was written in the 90's, was one of the coolest and funniest characters in comics...
9. Archangel- Just a cool name and a cool character
8. Jubilee- a funny character and great counter balance to wolverine
7. Cyclops- kind of an underrated character but a true badass who needs his moment to shine
6. Psylocke- beautiful and deadly
5. Professor X
4. Colossus
3. Nightcrawler- one of the coolest characters ever created
2. Gambit- another great character with killer powers
1. Wolverine- because he's the best there is at what he does

1,000,000. Cyclops - Never liked him. Sorry don't mean to offend anyone, the Character just bugs me.
10. Rogue - One tough Lady but I feel sorry for her that she can't feel intimacy.
9. Forge - I'm a gadget/electronic/tech lover. So wouldn't it be cool to make all kinds of gizmo's?
8. Prof. X
7. Archangel - I loved when he was mutated by Apoclypse. The cool blue skin and the metal blade feathers. Awesome!
6. Storm - If I had her power, Yeah! No more snow in my area.
5. Shadowcat - Can't explain it, I just always loved her Charater.
4. Iceman - As much as I don't like snow, if I could be Iceman it would be a totally different story. LOL
3. Wolverine - 'Nuff said Bub!'
2. Colossus - These last 3 Characters really are my favorite X-men most of all. I really love it when Colossus and Wolverine get in the Fight!
1. Nightcrawler - JRaup (above) describes him best. A Swashbuckler! Truly a unique, entertaining and loveable character.
I'm your Huckleberry. Why Johnny Ringo, you look like somebody just walked over your grave.

so, i'm approaching this from a "who best represents the X-Men angle" as a straight up favorites list would take me the better part of the day to decide on. i think, though, that this is pretty close to what i'd come up with after hours of deliberation. anywho, my picks:
1. Cyclops - he's simply the essence of what it is to be an X-Man, for better and worse.
2. Shadowcat - 'cause she went to the U of C and in alternate versions became a school teacher. that last bit is important as it is definitely in the cards for her character and the idea that she would teach, both mutant and human, says a lot about what the X-Men are meant to be. talk about living Xavier's dream.
3. The Beast - a great example of the dangers of knowledge and experimentation. also, his consistently upbeat outlook certainly helps ground the rest of the team. oh, and when he wants to he can absolutely lay it down.
4. Storm - it's really not shocking that she ended up a queen. always regal and great self-possession. and insanely powerful. and for a very long time the second best leader on the team.
5. Professor X - an odd placement, i know, but he does deserve to be on the list. other characters have actualized his dream in ways much more substantial than he has, but that could be part of the point. he's able to show the way, but unable to actually achieve the goal or live to see it anyways. kind of a Moses figure in that respect...with the ability to melt your mind.
6. Nightcrawler - that whole priest debacle aside, he's always been a solid character with lots of interesting things going on. plus, his AOA version was absolutley fantastic. his struggles coupled with an unwillingness to give up make him a symbol of the dream.
7. Magneto - more because of his inabilityy to pull off running the school. he tried to maintain Xavier's dream but his inability to do so really plays up the idealism inherent in what the X-Men are trying to pull off.
8. Cannoball - for similar reasons to Magneto; his defense of X-Force's methods to Xavier did a great job of showing off the potential downside of what the X-Men do and opened up the floor for a variety of approaches in achieving some degree of co-existence.
9. Jean Grey - the essence of the hard-to-kill X-Man. plus she was written for a very long time as quite the powerful mother-figure, team-glue.
10. Iceman - i've always liked him a lot and his background (mutant-hating family) lends itself to interesting storylines. that said, he is a chronic underachiever, but that also demonstrates what it might mean to be an X-Man; he could pretty much cripple the world with his power, but he fears that very fact. an interesting thought anyways.
