RETAILER ADVISORY: SUPERMAN #14
AND SUPERGIRL #33

Retailers, please be advised that DC will provide replacement copies of SUPERMAN #14 and SUPERGIRL #33.

Due to advance production schedules, the covers of both issues ultimately did not reflect the contents of the stories. Replacement copies with new covers will be provided at no cost to retailers.

Retailers who receive copies of SUPERMAN #14 main and variant editions ( JUN190540 - JUN190541) or SUPERGIRL #33 main and variant editions ( JUN190538 - JUN190539) are asked to destroy them when they arrive in stores.

The replacement copies of the SUPERMAN #14 main edition will have a new cover by Ivan Reis and Joe Prado. This, as well as the variant edition replacement copies, are scheduled to arrive in stores on August 28 without "Year of the Villain" branding on the covers.

New main cover to
SUPERMAN #14 by Ivan Reis and Joe Prado

The replacement copies of the SUPERGIRL #33 main edition will have a new cover by Kevin Maguire. This, as well as the variant edition replacement copies, are scheduled to arrive in stores on September 4 without "Year of the Villain" branding on the covers.

Retailers will be credited for these issues on their August 21 invoices.

Because of these changes, SUPERMAN #14 and SUPERGIRL #33 will be made returnable at a later date.

Watch for shipping updates on upcoming issues of SUPERMAN and SUPERGIRL coming soon.

I can't figure out why they'd change the variant B cover for Supergirl. https://www.previewsworld.com/Catalog/JUN190539

The original had her in the midst of a flock of birds beautifully drawn. The new cover has her in a flock of cats? Why would either cover be reflective of the content? If you check carefully they changed the covers but left the desriptins the same so the descriptions, especially Supermans still match what was on the cover that's supposed to be destroyed.

I could maybe see the change for the A Covers but the B's? Wall There's no way I'm, destroying that gorgeous original B Cover for Supergirl if it ships. That would be a crime.

Why destroy it ? Definite collector's item. Though guess if you're a retailer, could cause some mess with Diamond or whoever if you yourself are selling them.

How would they know?

I'm continually surprised at how many shops actually throw away these types of issues when Diamond does not ask for them back.

I've been wondering this myself for a long time. If you had to send it back to get credit that's one thing, but retailers are "asked" to destroy them and they will credit you?

I have seen a number of Gold/Silver Age books with the top third of the cover cut off and my understanding was at the time you had to return that part of the book to get credit. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Was that a thing and is this no longer the case?

BTW, hey BJ! If you need to unload some of those to sell on the sly so Diamond doesn't catch you...Call Me Big Grin

Yes, the return system back in the day sometimes only required the merchant to return the top half of the cover for credit, to save on shipping costs.

On old paperbacks sometimes you'll see wording on the info page saying "not to be sold with cover missing," or something to that effect. Same type of deal.

The Superman covers and the A cover for Supergirl might only have one shelf copy coming in. I'd have to check. That gorgeous Supergirl B I'm pretty sure I ordered extras of just for that cover alone not caring about the contents at all. I'm also pretty sure monidaw1 isn't registered with Diamond. I can't change the name and I'm already at the flea market so it's only a couple of tweeks to change the store name to Bob's Bargain Backstock Bungalow or maybe Poopoo's Corner Paper Rescue Rangers.

Bleeding Cool doesn't think anyone's going to destroy them.

The replacement Supergirl B cover is nice but it's not the same thing. I'm wondering if they plan to reuse the Cover B a few issues from now? That would definitely create a new level of confusion for the next 50 years as people start mixing them up with the undestroyed copies and the trade dress stuff hard to see in small writing at the bottom of the book.

Agreed, I ordered the B variant exclusively for the Derrick Chew cover and even though the replacement is still pretty good, the original is still vastly superior and I'll absolutely ask my dealer if I can still get that one.

If a book has been made returnable, retailers need to remove and send back the front covers of books for credit.

If retailers have been asked to destroy a book upon receipt, then they are just supposed to throw them in the garbage or recycle bin. There is no requirement to return anything to Diamond.

And nobody's going to be destroying anything.

You'd be surprised. My local shop throws them out if there is a recall due to misprint. I rescue them when I can.

Supergirl 33B is showing the cover that ships in two weeks as the destroy notice cover.

Same thing with Superman's B cover.

Never mind. They didn't ship the books anyway and it appears the few that made it to E-bay have them changing the cover to that Cat cover instead of the gorgeous one with birds they solicited. They claim they're going to make them returnable which works out nicely since I ordered a number of extras of the other cover and have no problem wanting to return the catty one. Why are cats on a bus anyway? Fish go to school not cats.

I saw that too and thought that was really weird.

My dealer didn't get his shipment of them either, so that works out for me anyway since presumably the replacement copies will be the awesome birds cover which is what they solicited and the reason I ordered it.

Unfortunately I don't expect to see awesome bird cover unless they use it on a later issues variant. I suspect they made the switch unadvertised to hello kitty cover and dropped the awesome bird cover entirely. Hello kitty cover's probably coming back but without the Year of the Villain banner.

I'm curious now to see if there's an art change to the 4 issues interiors which would confirm the racial theory for the switch. Lightning Lad or Cosmic Boy may have been drawn and colored differently than they wanted.

I'm not sure what the big deal is about the cover. I believe it was last weeks Flash had Captain Cold on the cover and a blurb about freezing the Flash and he did not appear, same as Detective and having Mr. Freeze on the cover.

I think all it was was that they had the Year of the Villain blurbs on the cover and they weren't actually tie-ins to YotV.

And they didn't want people collecting every YotV tie-in to get that and feel ripped off. They wanted to be careful that they didn't get accused of bait and switch, because that's a really bad thing to be accused of.

Haven't read the issues, so I don't know that for sure, though.
