How to review a comic that is so closely tied to a religious institution without offending somebody? Well, Magdalena under the hands of Ron Marz and Nelson Blake III is an average attempt at continuing the saga of this character created by the folks at Top Cow. It will somehow tie in with the Top Cow Universe (TCU) through the Artifacts story arc. Magdalena is the instrument of punishment for the Catholic Church in the TCU. The church is either going to enlist her in their scheme or replace her as there are many candidates that share her holy bloodline, presumable directly from Jesus Christ (Dan Brown should be reading this comic).
The covers have been always great and so has the illustrations in previous volumes, but with Nelson Blake the art is simpler and the coloring digital. Somehow I prefer the other combination of artists from previous volumes to this one.
The story is slowly evolving with the reluctant participation of Magdalena and the introduction of the son of the Devil as the great enemy (fitting nemesis, don’t you think).
Ron Marz’s is guiding several comics in the TCU so I’m expecting great events, conflicts and characterization to be evolving from his mind and into the comics he writes. Let’s hope we are not disappointed.
