When I first discovered the concept behind this book I was a little skeptical. Yet another power crazed Shi'ar Emperor threatening to take over the universe, only to be stopped by a riff-raff group of resistance. To my surprise however, this introductory story to the War of Kings event appears to be well thought out. That shouldn't surprise me considering Chistopher Yost is at the helm. He seems to have a knack for understanding X-Books.
This book had a real classic X-Men feel to it. Even Dustin Weaver's pencils matched with Nathan Airbairn's colour reminded me of a crisper look from the past. I also appreciated the Annihilation Wave reference. The Shi'ar's absence from that storyline was suspect.
Yost skilfully foreshadows Vulcan's greatest weakness, his need to earn the respect of his family. Polaris' "condition" is very intriguing. I've always enjoyed her character, especially the potential of her power. Rachel Grey, Korvus and Lilandra have a long road ahead of them, as the New Shi'ar Empire is growing by leaps and bounds under the rule of Vulcan.
I am usually not a fan of galactic stories, but I am looking forward to collecting this one.
