I really fell in love with this series. It reminded me of all the things that made comics appeal to me when I was young. And is the sappiest way, I am sad to see this series end!
The characters of X-Campus are so enjoyable because they are untainted by the long history of the 616 characters. A lot like the start-up of the Ultimate Spider-Man series, these characters were given a chance to start over. Each character exuded a freshness that you just don't find in comics anymore. And with gentle tweaks, they all became very, very relatable.
It is one thing to rip apart a history and rebuild it the way you see fit. Grant Morrison has showed us how easy (and unsuccessful) that is! But, it is a whole other thing to be able to reassemble a history in a new way, while honouring many of the details from the past. I can't give any one member of the creative team all of the credit for doing this so well, being the books were all broken into chapters, which were written and illustrated by different people. But I can say that they all deserve a great deal of respect, for being able to keep the X-Verse sacred while reinventing much of it.
Some might find X-Campus juvenile. Others might think it reeks of a Saturday morning cartoons. Whatever it feels like, I call it marvellous and nostalgic.
Thank-you X-Campus, for reminding me of how good comics can be!
