I’m not really sure what drove me to buy this book. I can’t say that I remember much about the movie with the same name and aside from one trade paperback Marvel Zombies book, I can’t say I have much zombie paraphernalia. That’s not to say that I don’t have an interest in the subject. I’ve just never really bought into the book end of the fad.
Of the 4 covers offered, I chose the “Wrap-Around” cover. It was a tough call, but in the end I really enjoyed to overflow of information on the wrapped cover. Raulo Caceres’ homage to the hippies cover was the most fun to look at of the group. Not only did it wrap the entire comic, but it had a great field of information layered through the fore, mid and background. I’m a sucker for covers that I can look at for a long time, like a Where’s Waldo book!
Now, I’m not entirely certain how Avatar Press labels their books with regards to rating. I am a Marvel Zombie at heart, and have little experience with indy books. Regardless, this book could use the explicit rating due to the nudity and violence inside. I for one, am not complaining. I personally thought all of the extreme panels were well managed and helped further the story as a whole.
The story itself takes place during the 60’s. As far as I can tell it is 1965 Washington DC (based on the March Against the Vietnam War backdrop which took place in 1965.) The zombie outbreak is merely a rumour, and is being swept under the rug as conspiracy theorist in nature. The story itself seems to feature two main characters: a mysterious drifter who is making his way to DC and a black army reservist who is leaving a pregnant wife at home to help with the protests in Washington.
Personally, I find the possibilities for this story to be endless. Mixing zombies with such an interesting time in history can only equal good things!
So, when all was said and done, I have to say that really enjoyed this book. I can’t wait to see what authors Mike Wolfer and John Russo do with the script. I guess this will just have to become my guilty little pleasure amid the superhero landscape!
