The mystery continues to unravel in this alternate reality. As I said before, I was a little leery going into this event. But I am happy to say that it has been a pleasant surprise.
Mike Carey has done an excellent job of tweaking a familiar theme; the persecution of mutants on a global scale, so that it captures an X-audience who mostly believes that there is nothing new left out there for their favourite mutants.
One of the things that spark my interests immediately is the re-casting of all the old mutants. New names, new roles and new attitudes force the reader to play little guessing games while reading. This makes reading fun because it's like I'm picking up the hobby for the first time again!
Carey has also captured many of the finer nuances that have made other characters and books successful. Wolverine for instance, is depicted in a light very similar to his Old Man Logan days.
All in all, things are getting very exciting in this book, as Magneto's house of cards begins to crumble causing a division in the mutant rebels. I'm interested in sticking around to see what the renegades uncover once they get a chance to talk to the prisoners in the basement. This will be interesting because all the mutants are convinced that there is no such mutant power as mind control, even though the prisoners are mostly telepaths.
