Before I get into it, I have to bow at the altar of Perez. His art on all the Teen titan stuff is Amazing!
Raven is obviously one of his favorite characters to draw. She just looks..well...pretty friggin' great throughout this comic.
The story is usefull, for lack of a better phrase.
Raven is the most mysterious character in the 80's Teen Titans (with the possible exception of Brother Blood). Her motives and backstory. heck, even her powers, are so nebulous.
This story helps that.
It tells us about her father (Trigon) and mother and her upbringing on Azarath. It is told in a way that isn't encyclopedic, but still informative.
It also adds some supporting characters in the form of some of the citizens of Azarath. Wolfman manages to write these characters with depth despite very little "screen time" for each of them. And strong supporting characters, I always say, make strong main characters in comics.
The highlight of this story, besides the Titans camping trip framer, is the initial showdowns between Raven and Trigon.
Perez and Wolfman write and draw them with horror and power.
Good stuff.
