I had little doubt that the relaunch of this age old series would be gold, and I have yet to be disappointed.
The young reincarnation of Loki continues his quest to defeat the apocalyptic threat of the Serpent. Using his trickster tongue, Loki manages to make complex deals with Mephisto in Hell and Hela from her own lesser Hel. As the book finishes he moves on to another plain of despair, Limbo!
Kieron Gillen masterfully weaves this supernatural story in a way that resembles both ancient legends and current comic mythos. He has little trouble making this story seem very significant in the over scheme of "Fear Itself". In fact, this is by far the best story within the "Fear Itself" story arc.
It is magnificent to watch Loki bring Mephisto and Hela to the brink of war, only to then have them become allies. The intricacies of his deceit are nothing short of astounding. Furthermore, it is difficult to decide whether this version of Loki is good or evil. I mean, how evil can he be when his lies only effect villainous characters?
Gillen's magical script is well matched by Doug Braithwaite's dream-like lines. On top of which, I absolutely fell in love with Stephanie Hans cover art featuring the young Loki and Leah.
Pick this book up. I hope JIM is back for good!
