A Creative Mis-Step!

This was the start of a new creative team and direction, but boy was it a rocky one.

Starlin and Marz basically throw out every bit of characterization the book had created for the past few years, while adding in a darkness and angst to Thor's character. The results are less than clean or impressive. Much of what occurs feels rushed and shoehorned in. There's no feeling of a natural progression of the story. Thor is just suddenly an angry and whiney jerk, with little explanation to it.

Not helping this any is the art of Bruce Zick. While competent enough in a strict sense of storytelling, and obviously trying to bring a Kirby feeling to the visuals, it lacks any spark of creativity. The art just sort of is "there." Even the solid inking of Steve Montano can't bring any life or energy to it.

Although, that Lou Harrison cover sure is awesome! It is easily the best part of the issue, but certainly not a good omen for an all new direction and creative team.
