Back in the 90's, DC introduced their
'diversity-friendly' line of comics under the imprint of
MILESTONE. It features characters like
Icon, Shadow Cabinet, Hardware and, the only one I really thought
COULD have been fun if I read it,
Static.
The
'Dakota Universe', as it was referred to, never really appealed to me as a reader. Not that I didn't like the idea...it just seemed...I don't know...
lame. What I had seen of the artwork didn't really look that good.
Fast forward to
2008 -
Dwayne McDuffie reintroduces some of the Dakota characters in the mainstream DCU in this issue. While Dwayne is a great writer of comics, I thoroughly
LOVED his work on the
JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED cartoon series. And his style is flowing over into the series.
This issue has
GREAT characterization, snappy and strong dialogue, and enough one-liners to make the reintroduction of the Dakota heroes a tier of the story, but not necessarily the backbone.
Kudos to DC for allowing this book to get some
creative juices flowing. It was worth the $2.99 alone watching
Black Canary lose her cool with 'The Trinity'.
My only weird moment...Batman's here, and it doesn't look like he's having half the problems here that he's having in all the other DC titles.
Good stuff. This book actually makes an ideal jumping on point for new readers, and the artwork is top notch!
In a world plagued by
Dark Reign,
Red Reign or
Fuschua Reign -
Justice League #27 was a welcome escape for this reader. I anxiously await issue #28.
