Who ever said you can't go back to your childhood? I re-read X-Force #1 recently and can't help but think to myself, was I really that impressed at one point in my life with terrible art, mediocre writing and cool looking (but not practical looking) characters with little or no personalities? The answer is, I guess I was. And that basically sums up X-Force #1. The comic was defiantly a product of the 1990's.
Cable, who takes over leadership of the New Mutants, takes his newly formed X-Force crew to find a new HQ and fight the evil Mutant Liberation Front. There's a lot of fighting that takes place, big guns, curvy women and terrible art. Cable has a few panels where he show a little personality, but not much, while "a mysterious man" named Gideon teaches Sunspot something, and Nick Fury wants Cable dead... sigh.
I have to give it to Rob Liefeld, the smartest man in comics. He drew almost all of his comics seemly half-assed (including this one), but not only created X-Force, but Cable and Deadpool. He was in the right place and time and new exactly what comic fans in the 1990's wanted and cashed in. He also sold jeans.
Finally, I do actually have happy childhood memories of this book, but not enough to give it over 2 stars.
