I had been waiting for this one for months...the letters pages in the B.P.R.D. had let out the news that creator Mike Mignola was once again going to handle both the writing
AND art for a one-shot (Mignola pencils and inks his work).
Those hopelessly addicted to Mignola's Universe (myself included) over the past few years, have had to consign themselves to seeing his art strictly on covers. I know half of you are saying "So what?". Mignola's stuff is a love-it-or-hate it affair. But those who love it had to slowly wean themselves from his art, as his ever expanding world couldn't be covered by one man alone. And helping him is an able-bodied army of talent, Guy Davis, Duncan Fegredo, Richard Corbin, and others...all super talented.
So Mr. Mignola has popped one out, and it was a goody. In reading it, I was struck by the quality that reminded me of some of the early Hellboy work, something that is lacking in the bulk of books in the market today: you could pick up this single issue and have a ball reading it. Period. You didn't need to read an associated title or cross over. No Secret Invasion or Final Crisis-like requirement to spend a fortune to understand or enjoy your book. Good clean cheap fun. Marvel & DC editors, take note.
So, if you always wondered if Hellboy was for you, this is the issue to test drive. C'mon, Mikey, try it...you'll like it!
