After reading too many Deadpool books to keep count of, i have decided that the “short story collections” format suit the character better than the ongoing series. Deadpool is best represented in quick hit stories that can be as outrageous as they want, without being tied to continuity or “Big Events.”
Deadpool #1000 features 11 short stories from 11 different creative teams. And to top it off there is a great cover gallery in the back of the issue that features some of Deadpool’s variant appearances on other titles.
The main strength of this issue would have to be the art. Paco Medina, Jerome Opena and Matteo Scalera knock there three respective stories out of the park with their artistic contributions. Opena was my most memorable experience from this book. His style is detailed, gritty and really captures the story.
Ultimately the book is a Deadpool book, which means that it is far from serious or relevant to the 616 Universe. There are plenty of laughs and some really great references (the Indiana Jones reference in Rick Remender’s story was great!), all of which make the issue worth its lofty price tag. And for the first time ever, the gallery in the back has me considering going out and finding all these variant covers, because they are classic!
So sit back and enjoy the Pool, sure it is shallow, but it’s fun nonetheless.
