It is funny, how so many of the other “Big Events” for Marvel were talked up but Second Coming has been the only one to live up to expectations. Chapter five, which was found within the pages of X-Force was a perfect example of Second Coming’s powerful storytelling.
In keeping with Cyclops’ orders, X-Force is hot on the trail of Cable and the would-be mutant saviour Hope. Cable; bound and determined to keep Hope safe, just keeps running. So, with every mutant-hating group in the world and the whole of the X-Men chasing these two, you could see why this was a face paced book. The action came fast and furious! Whether it was Wolverine slicing and dicing people, or Cable blowing up gas tankers, this book read like a John Woo movie script.
Mike Choi did an excellent job drawing the panels. The book still had a dark tone to it, but the action scenes made a lot more sense than they did when being drawn by the books previous artist. As minute a detail as this may be, I loved the way Choi drew Warlock.
Of course, you can’t discuss this book without discussing the death of one of the most veteran X-Men. I won’t reveal who it is here, but let’s just say that Pixie is going to be pretty busy with the teleporting duties from here on in... I only hope Marvel has the guts to keep this fuzzy, blue character dead. Sure he was a great character, but finally standing by the lost of a main character is what would make his death even more poignant.
Kyle and Yost continue to provide a potent one-two punch to the writing department at Marvel. Despite the obvious tatters the X-Force team is in, these two superstar writers continue to keep the book relevant and a must read every month.
