Writer Christos Gage really knows how to put these young 'Avengers In Training" through the wringer. It seems like they just can't buy a break, mostly of their own doing; or undoing as it were!
Bad choice after bad choice has haunted these fledgling superheroes, as they try to ensure that they don't live "down" to their professors' fears. And just when you thought you had seen it all, Veil; who always comes across as the most level headed of the crew, goes ahead and makes a couple of monumental mistakes, the last of which should have real, lasting repercussions.
It must be good writing on the part of Christos Gage, because I am starting to feel genuine hopelessness for this group of kids. It's a weird feeling, when as a reader you just want to throw your hands up and say, "Okay, I give up!" But the Academy students just don't seem capable of making decisions that indicate they get the big picture. Hopefully this is what the writers intend because in my eyes, these kids are more villains than heroes in training!
My biggest complaint about the book is the art. Don't get me wrong, it is not awful, but I have seen better. Penciler, Sean Chen's lines are a little too static for my tastes, making the characters seem more like statues than living people. More than that though is Jeromy Cox's colours. I find his palette too primary, which ultimately makes the book look cheap.
I'm still going to hang in for the ride, but I have to be honest, I don't see this book making it past issue 20.
