War of Hawks

In the last issue, Carter returned to Madam Xanadu to tell her all he has learned on his journey through time and space. However, as he fills her in on the situation, the Deathbringers arrive on Earth. Despite there only being three giant Deathbringers escorted by Carter’s former partner Idamm, the threat quickly magnifies. The giant metal Deathbringers open up and release hundreds of winged warriors into the skies. With an army taking to the skies and streets of London, all hope lies in Hawkman to save the day and end the Deathbringers once and for all.

(Spoilers Incoming)

As Idamm tells Carter that he has been fixated on killing him since his betrayal, Carter pleads for Idamm to stop the attack. However, Hawkman knows that this fight has to happen, so he tries fighting back only for Idamm to attempt to kill him with his own mace. Luckily for Carter, Madam Xanadu is there to cast a spell and save his life. Unfortunately for her, this results in her being attacked and incapacitated by the Deathbringers. As Carter grabs his mace and fights Idamm again, he must break away from that fight to stop the Deathbringers from kidnapping and killing civilians. When Idamm asks if Carter thinks he can save them all, he replies, “I…I’ll die trying. One more time. Maybe the final time.” Hawkman then finds a way and saves most, if not all, of the people being kidnapped.

As he continues to save the civilians, he can feel himself about to be pulled through time again. He fights it off and engages the Deathbringer army before being brought down. The Deathbringers surround him and begin to beat him within an inch of his life. They bring him to Idamm, who tells Carter that they won’t stop at Earth. The Deathbringers plan on going to every planet that Carter ever lived on and destroying all of them. At that moment, Carter has an idea. Remembering what his Kryptonian self said about being the weapon to stop the attack, he begins to focus his energy before opening a rift in reality and pulling all of his past selves into the fight. Now with an army at his side, the time has come for Hawkman to end the Deathbringers once and for all.

I would just like to point on that I theorized an army of Hawkmen like two issues ago. I suppose my only remaining question is if Hawkman’s battle with Idamm and the Deathbringers will finally allow him to fully atone for the blood he has spilt. If so, will he die in battle saving Earth? If I’m being honest, a heroic death would be a fitting end for Carter, allowing him to finally rest after countless lives. However, I’m still holding out hope for a Justice Society reunion somewhere down the line. Despite that, now that the battle has begun, will it be Hawkman’s last?
