Front: Like the classic war machines in George Pal's War of the worlds, the alien Attacker, rendered in flight, is distantly reminiscent of a manta ray-- with a touch of classic "flying saucer" thrown in for good measure (production painting by Tom Lay). The Independence Day shoot -- which began July 1995 -- was scheduled for only 72 days. Figured into the schedule separately, model and visual effects shooting required an awesome 200-plus days, with four or five additional units needed at any given time.
