*Will Eisner's groundbreaking Spirit comic book newspaper insert launched in June of 1940. Among Eisner's many innovations in the medium was his development of dramatic opening pages and an ever-changing logo treatment. Less than six month's after the strips's debut this memorable splash page appeared. The recipient of the spanking, Ellen Dolan, is the daughter of Police Commissioner Eustace Dolan and the putative girlfriend of The Spirit (criminologist Denny Colt).
